Meghalaya: Railway Expansion in Jaintia Hills Promises Economic and Travel Benefits

SHILLONG: In Meghalaya, particularly in the Jaintia Hills region, railway expansion plans have faced numerous obstacles. However, Cabinet Minister Comingone Ymbon remains optimistic about the potential advantages these plans could bring to the local population.

Ymbon emphasized the success of the railway network in nearby Garo Hills, which has been a boon for the people. During a recent visit to Garo Hills, he discovered that individuals could travel from Mendipathar to Guwahati for a mere Rs 30 using the railway, whereas taxis charged a much higher Rs 280 per passenger for the same distance.

One significant benefit Ymbon highlighted was that residents of Mendipathar now board the train at 7 am to transport their produce to Guwahati, returning the same evening. This not only facilitates trade but also enhances the income of the local population.

Moreover, the cost of rice in Mendipathar is notably lower than in Shillong, primarily due to the reduced transportation expenses made possible by the railway system.

Ymbon, who has witnessed the transformative impact of railways in other countries, firmly believes that Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya, can reap similar benefits. The economical mode of transportation by train, compared to expensive taxi services, holds the potential to positively impact both farmers and consumers.

In addition to improving travel convenience and affordability, Ymbon discussed the economic advantages of railways. They are poised to enhance the transportation of vital resources like limestone and coal, which will, in turn, stimulate the local economy.

Addressing concerns about a potential population influx, Ymbon reassured the public by stating that the state government had already passed an official resolution urging the Central government to implement the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya. This measure would help regulate the entry of outsiders, ensuring that the local culture and resources are preserved.

Cabinet Minister Comingone Ymbon is an advocate for expanding the railway network in Meghalaya's Jaintia Hills, drawing inspiration from the success witnessed in Garo Hills. The potential benefits include affordable travel, economic growth, and efficient resource transportation. With the promise of an Inner Line Permit, the region could embrace these advantages while safeguarding its identity.
