Guwahati: Meghalaya on May 28 reported a fresh Covid-19 case, a person who had returned from Haryana. With this, the tally of virus cases in the state rose to 21.

Confirming this via Twitter, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, took to Twitter, where he wrote, "Another person who had travelled from Haryana has turned out positive. Person is in Tura and under quarrantine. Total cases : 21, Recovered : 12, deceased :1, active cases : 8."

It is pertinent to mention here that Meghalaya reported its first case on April 13, 2020. A complete curfew was also clamped in Shillong owing to the virus spread, bringing in a complete halt to activities in the capital.

Gradually, 12 more people -- the late index patient's relatives, employees, and friends -- were tested positive in quick succession, taking the tally of cases in the state to 13. After a prolonged period of treatment, the last of the patients of this phase, a woman, recovered from the respiratory illness and Meghalaya was officially declared "corona free".

However, the joy was short lived as Meghalaya again reported a new coronavirus disease (Covid-19) case on May 19, a day after 12th and the last patient of the first cycle in the state recovered from the disease.

The number of coronavirus cases in India reached 1.65 lakh on Friday, as India reported 7,466 new cases in 24 hours, its biggest jump so far. India has recorded 4,706 COVID-19 deaths so far. Significantly, India has now overtaken China in the number of deaths.
