Shillong: Meghalaya has officially resumed coal mining after a decade-long ban imposed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in 2014. The ban was originally enforced due to unsafe and unregulated rat-hole mining practices that caused severe environmental degradation, water contamination, and posed serious health hazards to workers and nearby communities. Now, after years of legal and regulatory reforms, coal mining has restarted under a scientifically regulated framework aimed at ensuring safety, environmental sustainability, and compliance with the law.
According to the Ministry of Coal, two coal blocks in the state have commenced production after receiving statutory clearances. The Saryngkham A Coal Block in East Jaintia Hills was granted permission on March 10, 2025, and began production on June 3, 2025. Similarly, the Pyndengshahlang Coal Block in West Khasi Hills received approval on May 2, 2025, and started operations on June 5, 2025. This move marks a significant shift in the state’s approach to coal mining, focusing on regulated and eco-friendly extraction methods.
The Ministry highlighted that this milestone reflects its commitment to promoting legal, safe, and scientific mining while strengthening the contribution of the Northeast to the country’s energy needs. It also called on other state governments to support scientific mining practices and enhance coal transportation infrastructure across the region. The resumption of coal mining in Meghalaya is expected to boost the local economy, improve energy security, and ensure that environmental concerns are addressed through stricter monitoring and regulation.
