Meghalaya: State Govt To Take Decision on Reservation, Roster In Its Own Time, Says MDA

The statement was made despite pressure from opposition parties, including Voice of the People Party (VPP), which has called for a sit-in demonstration on May 17.

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government claimed that the decision on the reservation policy and implementation of the roster system in Meghalaya will be taken in its own time as procedure has to be followed.

The statement was made despite pressure from opposition parties, including Voice of the People Party (VPP), which has called for a sit-in demonstration on May 17.

MDA government spokesperson and Cabinet minister Ampareen Lyngdoh termed the matter as “very sensitive,” and that the government must “tread very cautiously.”

She went on to add that the issue is being discussed by the government with its coalition partners. The state government is planning to take up the matter with political parties, NGOs, and student organizations when the Meghalaya chief minister comes back to the state on Wednesday.

Lyngdoh also said that the Meghalaya government is inviting suggestions from everyone and utilise anything that can be positive and constructive.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma gave an assurance that the government will start the consultation process with stakeholders soon.

Reservation policy is a complex issue, which has been the subject of much debate in Meghalaya over the years.

Experts stated that the government going in the right direction in taking its time in making a decision, as it is important to get it right first time.

Some maintained that the government should also ensure that it consults with all stakeholders, including the opposition, before making a decision.

Meanwhile, the Meghalaya Government is “unmoved” by the Voice of the People Party (VPP) call for a sit-in demonstration over the state reservation policy.

Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday said political parties can say what they want to but procedure has to be followed by the government and “that is precisely what the government is doing; procedures will be followed in all aspects.”

The VPP is organising a sit-in demonstration on May 17 on the demand to put on hold all recruitment processes in the state till an expert committee reviews the state job reservation policy and the implementation of the roster system.

Sangma also informed that a cabinet presentation on the issue will be held on May 17 evening, followed by a meeting with all the partners of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) on May 18 and an all-party discussion on May 19.
