SHILLONG: In the remote village of Raibah in East Khasi Hills, a once-dilapidated government school has become a symbol of community pride and educational renewal. The remarkable turnaround of the Raibah Government LP School began in 2021, when dedicated teacher Batskhem Thabah took charge and sparked a grassroots revival.

Faced with crumbling infrastructure and declining enrollment, Thabah rallied local residents to restore the school premises. Their collective efforts, supported by institutions and NGOs, not only rebuilt the physical structure but also transformed the school’s academic approach.

The school introduced innovative, child-centric teaching methods and established two key initiatives—a mini library and a Living Library—to encourage reading and preserve local heritage. Students now participate in experiential learning, environmental projects, and storytelling activities that have revitalized their interest in education.

Today, the Raibah School stands as a beacon of hope, demonstrating how one educator’s vision, combined with community determination, can redefine rural education and inspire lasting change in forgotten corners of the country.
