Meghalaya To Establish 7 Police Outposts Along Border With Assam

SHILLONG: The cabinet decided on Tuesday to establish seven police outposts in "sensitive locations" along the interstate boundary with Assam in response to the shooting deaths of six people by the Assam Police at Mukroh village in West Jaintia Hills on November 22, which sparked widespread unrest in the state.

Conrad K. Sangma, the chief minister, told the media following the cabinet meeting at the Main Secretariat, "The most important decision for today was the creation of different outposts in sensitive locations of the state along the border areas, and the cabinet today officially sanctioned and approved Border Out Posts."

The CM stated that the outposts would be built in the West Jaintia Hills district at Mukroh Village and Tihwieh, in the East Jaintia Hills district at Mooriap, in the Ri-Bhoi district at Rani- Jirang, and in the West Khasi Hills region at Umwali, Lejadubi, and Langpih.

"The West Khasi Hills outpost at Athiabari will receive formal approval. Patharkhmah in Ri Bhoi will have its outpost upgraded to a full-fledged police station, and a new outpost will be established in the West Khasi Hills at Kyrshai ", he said.

"We will move quickly and make sure that the staff is present in these diverse locations and that the necessary infrastructure is developed at the earliest possible time," Sangma added. "Block-2's neighbouring Ri Bhoi district had also received suggestions, but we needed to check with the locals to make sure we got the right places. have requested that Meghalaya Police's DGP visit the areas and develop a proposal for the Block 2 areas of disagreement "CM stated.

On Tuesday, none of the pressure organisations using agitation to protest the police shooting disrupted the peace in the state capital.

CM Sangma stated in a statement on Tuesday that each BOP will cost about 2 crores each year. "The annual expenditures for the seven BOPs are about Rs. 14 crores, while for the remaining locations, they are about Rs. 3–4 crore. We anticipate that this choice will have an impact of roughly $17–$18 crore, he continued.
