SHILLONG: Earlier, as part of its "One Citizen One Tree" campaign on World Environment Day (June 5), the Government of Meghalaya has been successful in enlisting the support of the state's citizens, who have planted 1.5 million (15 lakh) trees.

This year , together with schools, the community, and departments, Meghalaya government has set a goal to plant 5 Lakh trees in the lead-up to World Environment Day as part of the Government of India's Mission LIFE campaign.

Taking on twitter, Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma informed that, “As participants of GoI’s #MissionLIFE initiative, #Meghalaya has set a target to plant 5 Lakh saplings in the run up to #WorldEnvironmentDay together with students, community and departments. West Garo Hills District alone will plant over 75 Thousand saplings. Happy to plant a sapling in Tura today with Hon’ble Minister @ampareenlyngdoh”

Meanwhile, CM Conrad Sangma attended the Integrated Programme at Matchakolgre LP School playground in New Tura, West Garo Hills, with Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh. The event saw the distribution of numerous government aids to beneficiaries intended to support the agricultural sector and encourage environmental conservation in the Garo Hills region. The event also celebrated the outstanding performers among deserving Garo Hills HSSLC and SSLC students.

In addition to delivering PRIME Agriculture Response Vehicles, the Chief Minister handed a stunning 59.4 lakh seed balls to 297 schools in the Garo Hills region. 3.6 million seed balls will be given throughout the entire state in an effort to encourage afforestation and ecological balance. Through this programme, Meghalaya hopes to become a more environmentally friendly state and to develop in children a feeling of environmental responsibility.

In a press release Government of India mentioned that ,a month-long mass mobilisation campaign on Mission LiFE is now in progress to foster widespread awareness and advocacy for LiFE throughout India. The Ministry has mobilised Central Ministries/ Departments, State/ UT Governments/ Administrations, Institutions, and private organisations to disseminate the word about Mission LiFE in accordance with the "whole of government" and "whole of society" approaches.

The current mass mobilisation effort intends to increase LiFE advocacy and awareness across all of India in the run-up to World Environment Day celebrations on June 5th, 2023.
