SHILLONG: Invoking Rule 125H of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, the Meghalaya Transport Department has mandated the installation of Vehicle Location Tracking Devices (VLTD) and emergency buttons in all public service vehicles and those requiring or holding national permits.
This directive aligns with the Automotive Industry Standard (AIS-140) prescribed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), with slight modifications in data protocol and formats to integrate with the Command and Control Centre established by the state government.
In the first phase of implementation, VLTDs, as per approved specifications, must be installed by empaneled agencies in the following vehicle categories by April 30, 2025: government-owned public transport vehicles, including buses operated by Urban Affairs, government hospitals, and educational and training institutions; public transport vehicles owned by PSUs such as MTC, STEMS, and MUDA; and all new vehicles manufactured from January 1, 2019, falling under the purview of Rule 125H of CMVR, 1989.
"This initiative ensures enhanced safety and real-time monitoring of public transport, aligning with national standards while addressing Meghalaya's specific requirements," stated Sanjay Goyal, IAS, Commissioner & Secretary, Meghalaya Transport Department.
