Shillong: In a move to boost tourist safety and streamline transport services, the Meghalaya Government has introduced a new policy to regulate the rental of private vehicles and two-wheelers to visitors.

Following a Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced that until now, the state lacked a formal mechanism to oversee the vehicle rental sector. “As you are aware, many tourists come to our State and rent vehicles from private individuals. Till date, there has not been a mechanism to regulate the sector or ensure the overall safety of the tourists,” he stated.

To address this gap, the government has formulated a policy that will introduce a regulatory framework for both two-wheelers and four-wheelers being rented to tourists.

Under the new guidelines, individuals and businesses who wish to offer vehicles for rent must register with the Transport Department. This step is expected to help in monitoring service quality, maintaining safety standards, and creating a more organized tourism experience.

The policy is a part of the state’s broader efforts to improve infrastructure and services for the growing number of domestic and international tourists visiting Meghalaya.
