SHILLONG: The District Magistrate of East Khasi Hills has issued a prohibitory order under Section 163 of the BNSS, restricting the movement of hay-laden trucks and pickups that are overloaded along the Mawtawar-Mawsiatkhnam Road and throughout Shillong city.

The decision was taken due to safety concerns over the potential risk of electric wire contact, which could lead to fire hazards, as well as the disruption caused by hay falling from the vehicles, resulting in litter and hindering community cleaning efforts.

Effective immediately and until further notice, the order bans the transportation of hay in overloaded vehicles on the designated routes. Those who violate the directive will be subject to legal action under Section 188 of the BNSS.

Local authorities are stressing the importance of strictly following the order to ensure public safety and preserve cleanliness. The District Magistrate has committed to enforcing the ban rigorously to prevent accidents and support ongoing community cleaning efforts.

The move has been welcomed by the local community, who have long voiced concerns about the safety risks and environmental problems caused by hay littering. Community leaders have commended the government’s proactive stance in addressing these important issues.

Truck operators and other stakeholders have been urged to modify their operations to comply with the order, helping to create a safer and cleaner Shillong.
