Shillong: In a major boost to Meghalaya's agri-export profile, 10 metric tonnes of organic black pepper from South West Garo Hills were shipped to Mumbai, marking the region's second major export after last year's 11-ton consignment.
Informing this, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma wrote on his social media page, "10 MT of organic black pepper facilitated by the Kerupara and Dingampara Integrated Village Cooperative Societies (IVCS) under Zikzak block, South West Garo Hills shipped to Mumbai, the area's second big export after 2023's 11-ton success!
Backed by MBMA & M-LAMP, local co-ops are turning Garo's 'black gold' into big opportunity.
The black pepper has been procured by reputed masala brand Everest. The growing demand for Meghalaya's organic spices is encouraging more farmers to tap into its potential."
The procurement by Everest underscores the rising national demand for high-quality, organic produce from the Northeast. With sustained support from institutions like MBMA and M-LAMP, the state's farmer cooperatives are steadily transforming Garo Hills into a key hub for premium spice cultivation.
