SHILLONG: Protests scheduled for December 24 by the Assam-based Hindu body Kutumba Surakshya Parishad (KSP) in Byrnihat and Khanapara have been banned by the district administration of Ri Bhoi, Meghalaya.
Following their demand that Meghalaya's Mawjymbuin Cave be reopened for Hindu ceremonies, the KSP decided to protest and had given a 10-day deadline for the same.
However, the Ri Bhoi administration prohibited the Kutumba Surakshya Parishad from holding any rallies in the designated places in order to maintain security and tranquilly before the Christmas celebrations.
The Kamrup Metro police and district administration are making efforts to keep things under control despite concerns about possible disturbances along the Assam-Meghalaya border.
The major transportation route between the two northeastern states could be disrupted by the intended blockade, which is allegedly being planned by the Kutumba Suraksha Parishad and is related to the ongoing Mawjymbuiñ issue.
An urgent petition was sent to the Chief Secretary of Assam earlier on December 23 by the Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) of Meghalaya, requesting prompt action to stop a possible road blockade by Hindu right-wing factions on the Meghalaya-Assam highway.
HITO warned that such a blockade would disrupt the peace and tranquilly of the local communities and expressed grave concerns about the potential repercussions.
To settle the Mawjymbuiñ issue, the organisation emphasized the need to adopt traditional techniques, particularly the Dorbar Shnong, the Hynñiewtrep people's indigenous government council.
