SHILLONG: Even though the Meghalaya Government clarified that skin disease affecting people in Mahendragangj, South West Garo Hills, was common in the area, Congress MLA from the region, Dikkanchi D Shira on Tuesday stated that on verification from villagers, it was found out that a large number of people were affected. Leader of Opposition, Dr Mukul Sangma said that there should be an analysis to study into the causes of the outbreak of the skin diseases.

Dr Sangma said that such skin diseases may be caused because of water even as he pointed out that the cause could be arsenic poison which is common in the border areas with Bangladesh.

“The case should be studied by involving experts from different institutions. Because similar conditions are prevalent in Bangladesh,” the leader of opposition pointed out.
