SHILLONG: A convict has allegedly committed suicide in a prison in Meghalaya by hanging himself after a District and Sessions Court in the state had declared him guilty.

The 40-year-old man has been identified as John Shallam.

As per reports, subsequent to the local court in Meghalaya announced the accused guilty in a murder case, the deceased convict was sentenced to five years and eight months in jail, the inmate killed himself deliberately in the prison's toilet in Meghalaya on Saturday, an official said on Sunday.

According to the Inspector General of Prisoners, Meghalaya Mariahom Kharkrang stated, "The convict was found hanging in a prison toilet of an isolation ward by the prison personnel in the morning." For the moment, a magisterial inquiry into the case has been commanded while the departed inmate's body has been sent for post-mortem examination.

There have been many incidents of murder and suicides recorded in the past few years in Meghalaya.

Earlier, as many as hundreds of residents from 4th Mile in Upper Shillong carried out a march protest against the rape and murder case of a 19-year-old woman in June 2019 which led to drastic changes in laws making procedures to end crimes against women.

Another 'Candlelight Vigil' took place at the Police Bazar organised by the A'chik (Garo) Youths of Shillong. Posters like "Acts of terror are acts of cowards", "society will not tolerate such acts where people are put in fear", "Meghalaya wants peace and shall see peace" and "is life and death at the mercy of the politicians?" were displayed on the venue.
