National Disaster Reduction Day observed at Chutwakhu Community Hall, Jowai

SHILLONG: National Disaster Reduction Day was observed at Chutwakhu Community Hall, Jowai on the theme 'Disaster Management Plan with special emphasis on COVID-19' organized by the District Disaster Management Authority.

Additional Deputy Commissioner and CEO of DDMA, West Jaintia Hills L Kynjing, CW Lyngdoh, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Crime branch), Jowai, J Synnah, Officer Social Welfare, Anthony Syiemiong representatives from Manbha Foundation were present at the function.

To make people understand how the virus spread an inter locality short play competition on the theme was conducted, the participating localities through the short play convey an important message urging the public to follow the various safety measures and to adhere to the government protocols.

The winners of first, second and third prize were awarded with cash of Rs. 7,000, Rs. 6,000 and Rs. 5,000 respectively.

DL Kharkongor, DDMA in her introductory speech said that the day is being celebrated to create awareness among the public of the various vulnerabilities caused by natural disasters and to be well prepared to reduce such disasters. She said this year the theme of the programme emphasizes on COVID-19 keeping in mind the present pandemic which has affected the whole world and urged each one to stay safe.

L Kynjing said with the climatic changes and keeping in mind the vulnerability of many natural disasters prone in our district, each one of us in our own ways should be well prepared to reduce such disasters. "We cannot stop the natural disaster but we can equip ourselves with a better knowledge to respond to such disasters," said L Kynjing.

Concerning the current pandemic, the Additional Deputy Commissioner urged every individual to follow the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and other protocols of the Government. "We cannot stop the virus but as responsible citizens, we can reduce it," added Kynjing.
