NE Dialogue Forum condoles demise of Father Stan Swamy

SHILLONG: The North East Dialogue Forum has condoled the demise of Fr Stan Swamy, an 84-year-old Jesuit priest on July 5 (Monday), 2021 with much grief and despair. The funeral was held as per COVID-19 SOP at St. Peter's Church in Mumbai, on July 6 (Tuesday), 2021.

Late Fr Stan had worked to ensure justice to the Adivasi/tribal community mainly in Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh States and as shared by one who had worked together during 2001-2005, Fr. Stan "challenged the authorities, raised his voice and stood for the marginalized people." That was his mission as he could not remain a silent spectator to acts of injustices being meted out in one way or the other and yet worked untiringly for reconciliation. He was dedicated to the uplift and empowerment of the marginalized, the discriminated, the racially, socially and economically oppressed and exploited.

Fr. Stan has left behind an indelible footprint for others to follow, whether in India, in Brazil, in the USA, the Philippines and wherever the indigenous peoples are being dispossessed and deprived, the coloured and the dalits are being ostracized.

Though Fr. Stan has left this world and crossed the bridge where there is no more pain and sorrow, the struggle for peace, for justice, for equality, for reconciliation must go on, affirmed the press release signed by Forum consultant Dr P.B.M. Basaiawmoit and Member Anthony Debbarma.
