NEHU Tura distributes essential items to Muga and Eri farmers

MENDIPATHAR: Incubation Centre of North East Hill University (NEHU), Tura campus distributed essential items to the Muga and Eri farmers in collaboration with Mega Eri Silkworm Seed Organization (MESSO) of Central Silk Board on Sunday at Mendipathar in North Garo Hills District, Meghalaya.

Dr. Pro. G. Singaiha, Campus In-charge of NEHU Tura, Dr. Sasi Kumar, Nodal officer of NEHU, Dr. K. Indrakumar, Scientist B of CSB, Dr. B. N. Sarkar, Scientist D of CSB, Vikram Kumar, Scientist B and Mahashankar Mazumdar, Scientist B and Incharge of Mendipathar MESSO office took part in the day-long programme. Torch, tray, secateurs and tarpaulin were distributed to 30 farmers of both Assam and Meghayala. The programme was presided over by Mahashankar Mazumdar, Scientist B and In-charge of Mendipathar MESSO office. The main objective of the distribution is to help the farmers in Northeast under the 'Livelihood Improvement Programme to North East Region' by the Incubation Centre of NEHU, Tura and sponsored by the ICAR- National Institute for Biotic Stress Management.

Dr. Pro. G. Singaiha, Campus in-charge of NEHU Tura, said that the main objective of the Incubation Centre of NEHU is to see the problems and needs in agriculture, horticulture and other sectors where farmers are involved. Incubation Centre of NEHU conducted field survey in the area and sorted out the problems faced by farmers and they discussed the issues with scientists all over the India.

Dr. BN Sarkar, Scientist D of MESSO, CSB Guwahati Headquarter, said that Muga is a unique silk that can be produced only in the north-eastern region of India. So, Muga silk has lot of potential to increase their income. Dr. Sasi Kumar, Nodal officer of NEHU, said that the Incubation Centre, NEHU will provide their helping hand to more farmers in the entire north-eastern region.
