SHILLONG: North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Vice-Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla has extended his earned leave until January 12, 2025, prolonging an absence that began in early November amid protests by students and staff.

In an email to the university’s Registrar on Tuesday, Professor Shukla cited the same reasons as his previous leave request, extending his leave from December 30 to January 12.He assured that, in case of an emergency situation, he would be available both on the telephone and by e-mail, but routine administrative duties have been devolved to the senior-most professor or Pro Vice-Chancellor.

The Vice-Chancellor’s initial leave began following widespread protests from students and university staff, who accused him of mismanagement and adopting an autocratic leadership style. The protests included a hunger strike that lasted nearly three weeks.

Shukla’s previous leave officially ended on December 29. Before he extended his leave, he had gone to the Ministry of Education and asked for increased security support from the central government to ensure his safe return to campus. Despite this request, he opted to prolong his leave.

This development comes against the backdrop of continued agitation from the NEHU community, demanding changes in the administration of the university. Prof Shukla's long leave will ensure that the university will remain under interim management as routine operations are overseen by designated senior faculty members.

The situation has come to the fore and students and staff alike have been urging an amicable speedy resolution to restore normalcy at the institution.
