Staff Correspondent

Shillong: Speaker of the Meghalaya State Assembly Dr Donkupar Roy stated that the new Assembly building will come up at Mawdiaing (New Shillong township) in three years time. Roy, who is also the Chairman of the High Power Committee (HPC), told The Sentinel, “I can assure you that we will have the new building and the process of completing the tender process is on.”

It is a known fact that the construction of the Assembly building has encountered several roadblocks in the past due to one reason or the other.

Roy stated, “This time there are no more hurdles, everything is going fine and smooth.” It may be mentioned that the 125-year-old State Assembly building was gutted by a devastating fire in January 9, 2001. Since then, the proceedings of the Assembly are carried out in makeshift government complexes like the State Central Library and the State Auditorium.

Stating that the new building will a state-of-the-art one, the Speaker also reiterated that the officers belonging to the State Public Works Department will go ahead with the examination of the bids made by the companies. The HPC will again meet on February 28.
