SHILLONG: The swearing-in of the new Meghalaya Cabinet was organised on March 7 in the presence of several key political leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The portfolios were allocated to different members of the cabinet on Thursday by the chief minister.

Several key departments and portfolios were retained by the members of the National People’s Party which had scored the majority in the recently concluded elections for the legislative assembly. The elected members of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Hill State People’s Democratic Party and the United Democratic Party also received a few portfolios.

Conrad K Sangma has kept several key departments with himself. Some of them include Finance, Forest, Political, Personnel, IT and the Mining and Geography departments to himself. The notification was issued by the Chief Secretary of Meghalaya, DP Wahlang.

One of the two deputy chief ministers of the state, PrestoneTynsong was allocated Home, Public Works, District Council Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs departments. While the other deputy chief minister Sniawbhalang Dhar will be handling the Urban Affairs, Transport, Industries, and Prison and Correctional Services departments of the state.

M Ampareen Lyngdoh has been given the duties of the Health and Family Welfare, Law, Information and Public Relations and Agriculture departments. She is also the only woman on the new Meghalaya state cabinet.

Paul Lyngdoh of the United Democratic Party will be handling the Social Welfare, Tourism, Arts and Culture departments. While another member of his party Kyrmen Shylla will be handling the Excise, Revenue and Legal Metrology departments of Meghalaya.

Hill State People’s Democratic Party member Shakliar Warjri has been handled over the departments of Sports and Youth Affairs, Labour, Registration and Stamps.
