SHILLONG: Meghalaya, in the last 24 hours, recorded 36 fresh COVID-19 cases taking the tally to 598 on Monday evening even as the State recorded 51 new recoveries. A total of 186 persons have recovered so far. Meanwhile, the government has informed that there has been no community transmission of the COVID-19 virus in the State so far. The State's active cases now stand at 547 with the BSF and the armed forces together accounting for 285 cases. There are 262 civilian patients, said a Health department official.

Of the 36 fresh cases detected on Monday, while East Khasi Hills registered the maximum number of 32 fresh cases (BSF: 12; civilians 19; and armed forces: one); there are two cases from East Jaintia Hills, and one each from West Garo Hills and Ri-Bhoi districts.

Till the filing of this report, Khasi Hills registered 443 cases (BSF 243; civilians 174; and the armed forces 26), followed by 52 from Ri Bhoi (43 are civilians and nine from the armed forces); 16 from West Garo Hills (BSF: seven, and civilians: nine); 15 from East Jaintia Hills; 10 from West Jaintia Hills; four from South West Garo Hills; three from West Khasi Hills; two from South Garo Hills; and one each from East Garo Hills and North Garo Hills.

On community transmission, a government communique said, "As per the assessment of the Health Authorities, there is no Community Transmission suspected."

As per definition," Community transmission means that the COVID-19 virus has become so widespread in a community that it gets difficult, if not impossible, to determine who is passing on the infection to whom".

However, the government said that in Meghalaya, the clusters of most cases have been identified through the extensive contact-tracing exercise; and the remaining ones will soon be identified as the contact-tracing exercise is underway.
