‘No Credence in Reports’ Says Former Home Minister RG Lyngdoh

SHILLONG: Former Home Minister RG Lyngdoh on Monday urged the people of the State not to give credence to news reports which stated that the Centre may not implement Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the State.

“People should not believe in such news. We should not react to it until we have credible information,” Lyngdoh said.

The State Assembly on December 19 adopted a resolution for implementing ILP, which will impose restrictions on the entry of outsiders in the State.

Lyngdoh also said that people have to be careful to see that no one gives a bad name to the current agitation in the State against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019, which according to him is by and large peaceful.

“One or two incidents (of violence) were there but all and all, the protests have been peaceful,” he added.

According to him if it remains like this, people will see that the indigenous people of the State are worried about their future.

“But we are not against any community. We have to show that our concern is for our and the future generation’s well being without being against any other community,” Lyngdoh pointed out.

He also said that presently what is happening is that the CAA is exempted only from the Scheduled Areas but the non-schedule areas, the CAA is applicable.

Lyngdoh said, “It is like saying that in your own house, the bedroom belongs to you, kitchen and bathroom is yours but the hall, we have to share with people we don’t know.”
