It may be mentioned that in order to stop illegal coal mining in the district, the administration, in the past few months had deputed Executive Magistrates to conduct raids, monitor and check illegal coal mining activities across the district.

East Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner FM Dopth, along with Additional Deputy Commissioner SS Syiemlieh, EACs DM Suja and S Marwein and police personnel conducted extensive raids on coal mines in Dkhiah, Rymbai, Sutnga and Sohkymphor villages, a statement stated.

The Deputy Commissioner led the coal mine raids covering the coal mining areas in Dienchynrum , Rymbai, Umshong and Iapmala. Syiemlieh took charge of the raids in Sutnga, Sakhain and Lelad areas, Suja covered the areas in Sohkymphor and Byrwai while Marwein covered the areas in Dkhiah.

However, according to the press statement during the inspection it was found out that were no fresh illegal coal mining activities.

“Many coal mines were left abandoned and there were no fresh coal dumps in the inspected coal mines. Abandoned labourers’ sheds, non-functional cranes, equipment, water-filled pits, and piles of waste coal and dirt were found in the coal mining areas,” the statement added.
