No Resolution on CAB: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma

SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday said that his government does not plan to bring a resolution against the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB).

The Chief Minister said that this time the Centre is holding discussions where the State has been asked about the issues and concerns regarding the bill and how those concerns can be addressed.

It may be mentioned that in May last year during the previous BJP-led government, the Meghalaya cabinet had passed a resolution opposing the CAB.

According to Conrad, his government came up with a resolution then because there were no prior discussions on the concerns of the people of the region about the bill. “We were not even asked whether you are concerned about the issue. When no discussions took place, we had no choice but to go ahead with that resolution,” the chief minister said. It may be mentioned that the Meghalaya government has invited Home Minister Amit Shah, to inaugurate the Ri-Bhoi police academy, and Conrad had earlier said that this opportunity will be used to discuss on the CAB.

The Chief Minister said that the state government was looking forward to a very positive response from the centre to address the concerns of the stakeholders in the northeast.

“At this point in time, since the approach is very different compared to last time, I don’t think there is a resolution (which is required),” Conrad said even as he added that he would see if the issues and concerns will be addressed and taken care of.
