Staff Correspondent

Shillong: The North East Students Organization (NESO) iterated its desire of having a National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the other sister States in the region. Chairman of NESO Samuel Jyrwa in his interaction with The Sentinel on Monday doesn’t desire to prematurely speak on the issue related to Assam without consultations with the student groups concern, yet he was lucid that the NRC exercise should be undertaken in all the other north eastern States. The entire fear is due to influx of foreign nationals who have slowly overwhelmed many parts of Assam and Meghalya.

“Our stand is clear, introduce the NRC in the different States with a base year that can be determined by history of the respected States”, stated the NESO Chairman amidst the general thoughts that Meghalaya could be a possible huddle place for many of 19 odd lakhs of people who are left out from the NRC from Assam

There were also talks that there are people from the Khasi-Garo Community, the indigenoeous people of Assam were left out of the NRC, The NESO Chairman said, “We have not received any complaint, and if necessary we will take up with the government of Assam concertedly”.

Going by the NRC list, some of the NGOs are on, carrying with their own precautionary measures. They were checking movement of vehicles entering Meghalaya to prevent suspected foreigners with no valid papers enetering the state.

With apprehensions of influx by detected Banlagdehis looming large amongst the NGOs, the Meghalya Director General of Police (DGP) S Chandranathan told this coprrespondent over phone that the infiltration branch has taken a lot of steps to allay all apprehensions. “We have taken a lot of steps to deter any foreigner attempt to enter our State”, he stated”.
