SHILLONG: The Legal Care and Support Centre, Department of Law, North Eastern Hills University, Shillong in collaboration with the Meghalaya Legal Services Authority organised a webinar on 'Human Rights Day' on Thursday.

N. A. Khan, District and Sessions Judge and Member Secretary, Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority delivered the keynote address while Angel Habamon Syiem, Assistant Professor, Department of Law, Tezpur University and Badapbiang Tariang Dkhar, Assistant Professor, Jindal Global Law School participated as resource persons.

In his keynote address, Khan said that human rights is a birthright and therefore inherent in all individuals, irrespective of caste, religion, sex, nationality. Stating that these rights are essential for all individuals. Khan added that human rights are also sometimes referred to as fundamental rights, basic rights and natural rights.

As we observed Human Rights Day, Khan opined it is the time for us to introspect and reflect how far have we been able to achieve this noble objective of protecting, preserving, propagating human rights and if we are not aware of these rights it would pose a great threat to the entire existence of the human race.

The programme was followed by the deliberation on the topics "Pandemic and Human Rights" and "Human Rights and Indigenous Peoples" presented by the resource persons.
