SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Secretary D.P. Wahlang has confirmed that only the Voice of the People’s Party (VPP) has formally communicated its decision not to participate in the recently notified Railway Committee. While leaders of the Congress have spoken publicly about their stance on the issue, the government has not yet received any official communication from the party. Similarly, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has not made its position explicitly clear.
“The committee on railways has been notified. We have received a letter from one political party stating that they are not interested in being part of the committee,” Wahlang said, referring to the VPP’s official response.
When asked whether any letters had been received from the Congress or the TMC, Wahlang clarified, “We have received a letter from only one political party, which is a regional party. We have not received any communication from the others so far. Maybe when the letters come, we will consider them.”
Upon further confirmation, the Chief Secretary stated, “Yes, the letter is from VPP.”
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma is currently on a tour of the Garo Hills, and as a result, the scheduling of the committee’s first meeting is pending. “The Chief Minister is presently out of station and touring the Garo Hills. Once he returns, a decision will be taken regarding the date of the committee’s first meeting,” Wahlang added.
