SHILLONG, July 2: The constituents of the People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) are campaigning for the ouster of its Chief Executive Member (CEM), Pynshngaiñ N Syiem.

One of the constituents of the PDA who is a signatory of the letter seeking the ouster is the United Democratic Party (UDP).

When contacted, the UDP on Monday said that it was going ahead to demand the removal KHADC, CEM, Syiem from his post.

“All five of our members have already signed a letter demanding a special session of the Council to remove Syiem from the post of CEM,” UDP Parliamentary Party (PP) leader Teiñwell Dkhar said.

It may be mentioned that there were reports that the MDCs are garnering support of fellow members to sign a letter to be sent to the Meghalaya Governor to demand for the special session.

However, Congress MDC from Mawlai who is also the MLA, Process T Sawkmie has denied that there is a move to topple, Syiem.

“We have recently given a letter of support and still are part of the PDA,” Sawkmie said.

However, as per reports Sawkmie had allegedly ditched the MDCs by refusing to sign the letter.

Meanwhile, when contacted People’s Democratic Front (PDF), MDC, from Mawkhar-Pynthorumkhrah, James Ban Basaiawmoit to which the CEM belongs said that he has no knowledge about such a move.

“Presently there is a bigger issue of relocating the residents from Sweeper’s Lane. Therefore the question does not arise for me to think about the removal of the CEM or calling for a special session,” Basaiawmoit said.

National People’s Party (NPP), Parliamentary Party leader in the KHADC, HS Shylla did not make their stand clear on the issue. However, NPP sources said that their MDCs have signed the letter.

Teilinia Thangkhiew of the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) said that the party will stick out with the PDA.

In the 29-member House of the KHADC, the PDA has 28 members while MDC from Jaiaw, Adelbert Nongrum is the lone Opposition member.
