Peace must be maintained along Assam-Meghalaya boundary: Mukul Sangma

SHILLONG: Senior Congress leader and leader of Opposition in the State Assembly Dr Mukul Sangma on Tuesday said that during his tenure as Chief Minister of the State, a clear stand was taken by Meghalaya and Assam that peace is maintained (at the inter-state boundary) and a situation is not created where there is fear psychosis in the minds of the people. “In the last preceding two years, you have seen that there has been a number of incidents one after another,” Dr Sangma said.

According to the Opposition leader it is unfortunate that mistrust, doubt and tension is prevailing along those areas.

Dr Sangma also said that both the States have been committed to ensure that there is no more new settlement in the disputed areas. He also informed that in the interest of those people living along the Assam-Meghalaya inter State boundary who had been adversely affected because of tension due to the dispute, both governments want to initiate various developmental programmes.

“Developmental programmes and investments in the interest of the people residing in the border villages must be allowed but when any of the counterpart takes up any programme at the district level, they should inform the other,” Dr Mukul said. The Opposition leader also said that until the issue is resolved neither Assam nor Meghalaya can claim any part of the land.
