'Peace Talks' With Banned HNLC Soon: CM Conrad K Sangma

CM Conrad K Sangma says that the 'peace talks' with the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council will start soon

SHILLONG : Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma have reportedly informed, that the 'peace talk' with the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) is on process. Talks have been going on with the militant group in an unofficial level, and the state is waiting for more 'official talks'.

The CM stated that, the peace talk with the proscribed HNLC, is not similar to a government programme or a government meeting. The militant group was banned for a valid reason, and the state needs to double check the overall status before an official peace talk with them.

The CM also mentioned about the involvement of the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Union Home Minister himself in the matter. The Union home minister is keeping a keen eye on the issue. MHA is sure of the fact that the 'peace talk' will definitely take place with the HNLC.

Sangma continues by saying that "many things needs to be checked before the official announcement of the peace talk. Though many discussions are going on, but in an unofficial level. The talk with the HNLC is not similar to a government program. Proper planning and preparations needs to be done and varied backdrop tasks needs to be look after. Discussions and pre-discussions will be done within the ministry before the final announcement ".

No one should be pushed for the matter, and provide space to the officials to build up the comfort level before the actual 'peace talk' with the banned HNLC.

Recently, five members of the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) visited the State in order to have a 'peace talk' with the Meghalaya Government. The militant team, which was proscribed for its alleged link with illegal activities in the state, comprises of its Vice Chairman Manbhalang Jyrwa. Political Secretary Aristerwell Thongni and Foreign Secretary Phrangkupar Diengdoh and two PSOs.
