SHILLONG: Political leaders and civil society organizations of the State in one voice on Saturday expressed their opposition to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill during a meeting with Union Home Minister, Amit Shah.

Apart from Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong and a few of other cabinet ministers and opposition leader Dr Mukul Sangma there were representatives from the KSU – an affiliate of the NESO, the HYC a constituent of the CoMSO, FKJGP and the traditional heads.

Speaking after the meeting with Shah, NESO chairman, Samuel Jyrwa said that the organisation frankly told the Union Home Minister that its stand since 2016 was against the CAB.

“Till now too we are against the CAB. This piece meal solution will not offer any solution,” Jyrwa said.

He said that Shah offered solution to all the states in a piece meal manner even as the NESO chairman said that northeast is a bloc and different states of the region if left out will definitely affect the states in the near future.

“As NESO we are standing for the whole of northeast and we are against the CAB and we will take a call after the meeting with the Home Ministry and discussing with people from NSF, AASU. Stakeholders from Manipur have been consulted,” Jyrwa said.

Earlier, on Friday evening, after a meeting between the government, political parties and various social organisations, the state resolved to oppose the CAB.

In a resolution submitted to the Union Home Minister, Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma urged Shah to accept the resolution in the interest of the people of Meghalaya.
