Portraits of Meghalaya freedom fighters unveiled at Raj Bhavan

SHILLONG: Portraits of Meghalaya freedom fighters were unveiled at Raj Bhavan here on Saturday.

In his address on the occasion, Meghalaya Governor Tatagatha Roy appreciated the paintings done by noted artist Raphael Warjri and others.

The portrait of Togan Nenmingza Sangma was unveiled by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Tirot Sing Syiem by Speaker of Meghalaya Assembly Metbah Lyngdoh and that of Kiang Nangbah by Cabinet Minister Sñiawbhalang Dhar.

On the occasion, Chief Minister Sangma recalled his meeting with renowned historian and former Chairman UPSC, Prof David Syiemlieh about the unsung heroes of the freedom struggle. He said that the gesture of the Governor reminded him of the deliberations and expressed his gratitude to the Governor for this historic occasion. He also appreciated the artists for the spectacular portraits with elements that reflected the specific local cultural heritage. Noted artist Raphael Warjri was felicitated by the Governor with a shawl and a plaque. Later Warjri informed that the paintings were done along with an apprentice Denis Marbañiang with proper research and inputs from resourceful exponents of history and culture. One of the most significant aspect of the portraits is that the paintings convey the authentic representation of the patriots on the period and local situation, he said.
