Probe Ordered Into Pollution of Elephant Falls

A REPORTER

SHILLONG: A picture on social media has circulated that sewage water has been allegedly released since Sunday morning and has resulted in polluting the Elephant Falls — a waterfall in the area which is also a tourist hotspot.

According to sources, tourists visiting the waterfall on Sunday have complaint against the condition of the waterfall which has become very dirty.

Even on Saturday, the Falls attracted around 1,500 – 2,000 tourists from near and far, and there were complaints regarding the foul smell, which emanated from the picturesque Falls.

When contacted, Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills District Matsiewdor War informed that a team of Magistrates has been sent to the area to inspect the waterfall.

“The Magistrate has also been asked to institute an inquiry into the matter and submit the reports to me,” she said.

She also said that after a proper inquiry is done a show cause notice will be issued to anyone involved in releasing sewage water into the waterfall and action will be taken as per the law.
