Punjab Government delegation meets Chief Minister

Shillong, June 4: Concerned over unverified reports in social media over the current law and order situation in Shillong, a delegation of the Punjab government on Monday met Chief Minister Conrad Kongkal Sangma.

According to the delegation, the basic objective of their visit was to know the ground reality and to find out the veracity in the news which is being spread through the social media.

The four-member committee was headed by Minister of Jail and Cooperation Sukjinder Randhawa.

Speaking to journalists after meeting Conrad, Randhawa assured the delegation that the situation was under control.

“We were assured by Meghalaya Chief Minister that the State government is taking all-possible measures to ensure the security of the Sikh community in Meghalaya,” the Punjab Minister said.

Randhawa said that the delegation would see that there is no wrong interpretation or misinformation spread through the social media.

“We would like to see that the peace and harmony that are prevailing in Meghalaya is not disturbed,” the Minister from Punjab said.

Randhawa said: “The Meghalaya Chief Minister also told us that the report which was spread was unauthentic.”

Randhawa, while stressing the need to maintain peace and harmony, said there are students from Meghalaya who are studying in Punjab and they will not like to see any unpleasant incidents happening to them.

“We’ll be a sending a clear message that the Sikh people in Meghalaya are getting all the required support from the government,” he added.

He also said that Punjab had faced the problem of terrorism but they had never faced any communal violence.

“We would not like to see any communal disharmony. We would be meeting the Sikh people residing in Punjabi Line tomorrow and urged them that they should try to promote peace and harmony,” Randhawa said.

On the demand to relocate the residents, the Punjab Minister said the Sikh community claimed that they have a stay order from the court on the matter of shifting them from the present location.

“We would not be able to relocate them immediately. This is a long process and let the court gives its final verdict,” he said.

Echoing similar views, Congress MP from Punjab Gurjeet Singh said that the matter of relocating is subjudice adding that the Chief Minister would take a decision in the best interest of both sides.
