Punjab National Bank, USTM to help educate rural girls in Ri Bhoi

9th MILE, RI BHOI: In a novel initiative of corporate-institutional collaboration, the Punjab National Bank, Guwahati Zonal Office has joined hands with the University of Science And Technology Meghalaya (USTM) to work for the educational development of rural girls of the neighbouring villages of the university, stated a press release.

Shio Shankar Singh, General Manager cum Zonal Manager of Punjab National Bank, Guwahati announced on Monday that the bank will provide educational support to all the girl child of the USTM-adopted Jorbil village, located in the Kling area near the university. Singh made this announcement while he was attending a felicitation programme for 20 faculty members of USTM for their recent Research Publications in UGC Care Listed Journals. The function was organized by Research Division of USTM at the Nirmal Kumar Choudhury auditorium, the press release stated.

Addressing in the programme, Singh, who is also the Chairman of Assam Gramin Vikash Bank, said: "Bank and a university can really work together in a unique way for the transformation of the society. We can take up education for every girl child of the village." He expressed gratitude to Mahbubul Hoque, the Chancellor of USTM, for the latter's constant support and encouragement to the underprivileged rural students of the region for their educational benefit.

In the same function, Chancellor Hoque awarded certificates and cash rewards to 20 faculty members whose research papers have been published in various UGC Care Listed national and international journals during November and December, 2021. The Chancellor also announced that from now onwards, on the first Saturday of every month, the university will carry on this initiative for overall development of research and innovation in the university.

Hoque emphasized that every department of the university will be contributing to different aspects for the development of the ideal village adopted by USTM. The programme ended with vote of thanks delivered by Prof GD Sharma, Vice-Chancellor of USTM.
