Ranikor MLA’s resignation move comes a cropper

Staff Correspondent

Shillong, June 21: Five time Congress MLA Martin M Danggo who was scheduled to tender his resignation letter to the Deputy Speaker of the Meghalya Legislative Assembly abruptly cancelled or deferred the same on Thursday evening.

Danggo who had publically announced to resign as a Congress legislator and to re-contest as a candidate of the Nationalist People’s Party (NPP) from Ranikor constituency had sought an appointment with the Deputy Speaker Timothy D Shira on Thursday to complete the formalities. However he failed to turn up within the time fixed at around 5 pm.

Amidst the waiting journalist, the Deputy Speaker walked down the lawns and announced that the Ranikor legislator will complete the official formalities next week. Asked on the reasons, Shira said, “ I am not aware of the reasons except a for the telephonic call from the Home Minister who seek deferment till next week.”

Danngo could not be contacted for his comments for the sudden postponement of his resignation. Earlier, talking to The Sentinel, Danngo firmly stated that he would resign as a Congress legislator when the Chief Minister announced the inaugural date of Ranikor Civil Sub Division. The Cabinet was supposed to take a decision on the issue on Thursday evening but the Chief Minister fell sick and the meeting was deferred.

Political analysts are of the view that this could be a ploy of the five-time Congress legislator to re-convince the electorates that he is living up to his words.
