SHILLONG: The residents of Mawlai Nongpdeng and surrounding areas are facing a problem as they can't commute like before as the bridge near Seng Khasi College has not been completed yet. The old bridge was dismantled in 2019. Though construction work started on the new bridge yet it remains to be completed.

Speaking to The Sentinel, the headman of MawlaiNongpdeng, P. Khongsit said, ''The public is facing lots of inconveniences owing to the delay in completion of this bridge. Now people have to take a long roundabout way to reach their destination.''

The headman also pointed out that many schools students are facing problems as they were unable to use the bridge for the past few years. They had to take a long route for their educational institutions.

He also urged the authority concerned to complete the bridge at the earliest.

When asked if the traditional heads followed up this issue with the PWD (Public Works Department), he said, ''We have tried to take it up with the department; however, the process could not be completed due to the pandemic.''

He pointed out that even when construction work was allowed in the State, the constructing work of the bridge moved at a snail's pace.

''Now with the second wave of COVID-19 in the State and despite the government allowing construction work, we don't know when it will be completed,'' he said.
