SHILLONG: The Principal Secretary of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department G.H.P. Raju has said that the department is banking on the Border Security Force (BSF) and the local police to prevent cow smuggling.

"We don't know the source of smuggling, and smuggling can start from West Bengal or other States and not necessarily only from Assam. But, Assam may be the transit point," added Raju.

With regard to the 'Cow Protection Bill' introduced in the Assam Assembly recently, Raju said, "Among the best breeds of cows are those from Assam. We will take up the matter with the Assam counterpart on the matter.''

He pointed out that because of the demand for meat in the State, the authorities concerned have introduced initiatives to enhance meat production, such as the introduction of an exotic breed from Andhra Pradesh, Ongole Bull, a local breed there. It has enormous body mass and gains a weight of nearly 500 kgs. It is also suited for the weather of Meghalaya.
