SHILLONG: Tensions flared briefly at the Indo-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya’s West Jaintia Hills on Thursday following a routine border pillar survey near Muktapur. The survey teams from both India and Bangladesh, alongside personnel from the Border Security Force (BSF) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), were conducting a scheduled inspection when the situation escalated.

The presence of security forces caused panic among local Bangladeshi children and youths who were playing in the vicinity. This led to a brief altercation between the locals and security personnel, raising concerns along the sensitive, unfenced border.

“It was a routine survey, and there were survey teams from both India and Bangladesh, with the forces merely assisting,” said a BSF official, clarifying the situation. Security forces from both sides are now closely monitoring the area to ensure continued calm and to prevent any future flare-ups.
