SHILLONG: A team comprising of faculty members, scientists and industrialists from Royal Global University, Guwahati, the North Eastern Hill University and NEIGRIHMS have developed a tunnel sanitizer based auto temperature device which will disinfect persons entering the tunnel and also detect their temperature.

The device was developed by Hirak Ranjan Das, Noor Islam and Sasanka Barooah from the Royal Global University, Guwahati, Dr Dinesh Bhatia from the North Eastern Hill University, Shillong, Dr Kalyan Kumar Das, Assam Engineering College and Prof. Animesh Mishra from NEIGHRIMS, Shillong.

According to the team, the tunnel was designed with a view to reduce the sanitisation period in places where there are people entering in large numbers such as religious gatherings, educational institutions, hospitals and more.

They informed that when a person enters the tunnel, a nozzle will automatically be activated which will sanitise their cloths and shoes in 3-4 seconds.

Following this, the person will experience a hot air blast to kill surviving bacteria and virus. In the third phase, the person will be exposed to UVC light with a wavelength ranging from 207 to 222 nm which is considered to be safe for human skin and eyes.

Further a thermal scanner will be placed at the entrance to detect the temperature of the person. People with a higher-than-normal body temperature will not be allowed to enter the premises.

The team also mentioned that they contributed funds using their own resources to develop the device.
