Rumour mongers will be arrested: Meghalaya Police

Shillong: Following the government advisory to close down educational institutions, cinema halls, malls, and others throughout the State, there were rumours doing the rounds that markets will shut down in Shillong from tomorrow. The rumours emanated from the misinterpretation of the statement of the Deputy Chief Minister which read as: “When it comes to the worst of the worst, we have to close down”. Fortunately, the rumours have not spread through social media but through word of mouth in some areas.

A senior official in the Police department cautioned, “Anyone who spreads such conjectures will be arrested because it creates panic and unnecessary inconvenience to the common man.” Going by the scene in Bara Bazaar and Police Bazaar, the number of people in the streets has also diminished drastically, said the traders.

Moreover, the government has officially announced that all tourist places will be shut down with immediate effect till March 31. It will have to be reviewed and is likely to be extended to April 15. The official notification of the government also urged the tourists intending to visit the State to revise their traveling plans.

The immediate outcome is understood that those few tourists languishing in the State will not sit idle and will definitely leave in a day or two, stated a guest house owner in the city.

While questions are being raised on the Church’s take on the general advisory to restrain from having mass convergence, the Presbyterian Church of India (PCI) issued a statement on Wednesday: “We are keen to cooperate with directives and advisories to ensure that our members provided by the government.”

The Seng Khih Lang, a body of the Khasi indigenous faith, has postponed its annual conglomeration at Wahejer, West Jaintia Hills from March 27 to 29, informed its president HR Kurbah.
