Shillong, Aug 8: Police barricades, mobile teargas mortar loaded jeeps and security personal continue to maintain night vigil at Mothphran and Bimola junction to supplement the night curfew in order to pre-empt any unforeseen situation. Sixty nine (69) days have passed since June 1 when violence threw half of Shillong into turmoil and till date continues to be a cause of concern to the security agencies.

The Sentinel had the first account of the vigilance by the security personnel, who are now at ease after the situation subsided sometime in the midst of June. Nothing untoward has happened in the past 45 odd days in these areas and its periphery that has been considered vulnerable.

But the police advisory to the district administration to continue with the night curfew is based on intelligence inputs. “The undercurrents are still there and the night curfew and security measures are part of the steps to prevent any unforeseen situation that may lead to any law and order situation”, stated the Superintendent of Police (city) Stephan Rynjah during an interaction with The Sentinel.

“Taking into consideration on how the then situation snowballed into an issue of communities, the developments that followed after the NRC issue in Assam and the voices raise in various narratives, we still have to go on with the type of security arrangements in these areas”, stated Rynjah. Yet he is lucid to state that Shillong has limped back to normalcy a month ago, except for truly making everyone safe.

A Kashmir like stone pelting situation was replicated in the heart of Shillong for three days till every one ran out of gear in the fourth day. The investigation is on how a trivial issue raked up a volatile situation that relates to communities.
