Shillong: The Meghalaya Secretariat witnessed another security breach on Friday morning when activists of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) entered its main gate while displaying placards and raising slogans. This is the second such security breach in as many months.

On June 4, a group of hawkers entered the premises of the Main Secretariat after breaking the lock of the entrance gate.

On Friday, the members of the HYC wanted to meet the Government functionaries to discuss various demands raised by it especially the one pertaining to the issue of Inner Line Permit (ILP) and National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The East Khasi Hill Superintendent of Police (SP), Davis Nestell R Marak admitted that the security breach could be due to intelligence failure. When Marak was pointedly asked, he said, “Probably because as far as I am concerned, I did not get any inputs regarding of congregation they may have planned. Only once these people have congregated I got the information.”

The East Khasi Hills, SP also said that the police will write to the Deputy Commissioner of the district and propose it to impose section 144 CrPC in and around the Secretariat. Marak said that security personnel manning the main gate of the secretariat did not have an inkling that people who were entering the compound were HYC members. He said that the HYC activists could not be identified since they did not come together as a group but came in twos and threes.
