Guwahati: In response to the spike in COVID-19 cases in the Border Security Force camp at Umpling, Shillong, the Meghalaya Government has decided to conduct random testings in localities adjacent to the camp. These tests, in a bid to break the chain of the transmission of the virus, will be conducted in Umpling, Nongmensong and Mawpat.

Meghalaya's deputy Chief Minister P Tynsong remarked that the present situation in Meghalaya is "grim" while addressing the representatives from the press on Friday at Yojana Bhawan Auditorium, Shillong.

Elaborating the major decisions taken at the government's review meeting on Thursday, he said that it was decided to declare the BSF campus in Umpling as a containment zone. It has also been decided to start random testing in three areas neighbouring the BSF campus, he added.

Revealing another important decision taken in the meeting, he said, "From now on, drivers delivering essential commodities should also wear PPE kits while carrying out their responsibilities."

Commenting on the closure of NEIGRIHMS hospital, Tynsong said, "Efforts have been taken to initiate immediate contact tracing followed by sanitizing the infected areas. Soon after completion of this, the hospital will be reopened."

The Meghalaya Government also discussed measures to be taken against the persons who had attended a wedding at the posh Greenwood Resort in Guwahati, Tynsong revealed, stating "It has been confirmed that they have violated the guidelines given by the government. In view of this, the government has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Shillong to immediately file an FIR against the violators."
