SHILLONG: The Shillong Press Club has taken strong exception to an incident that occurred on Saturday (March 20) at Len Mawtap Village under Sohiong Constituency in which a camera person, Meban Kharmalki was intimidated, abused and assaulted by Komel Nongbri -- a former Sordar of Sohiong.

The incident, which left Meban shell shocked and shaken, happened while the pressman was discharging his professional duty in covering a public meeting by the residents of Len Mawtap who opposed the construction of a public ground under the 'PMKKY' (Pradhan Mantri Khanij Kshetra Kalyan Yojana) scheme amounting to Rs 22.50 lakh.

The residents opposed the construction as there was no explanation or clarity about the scheme from the office of the Block Development Officer. The cameraman had attempted to speak to Komel Nongbri to gather some information on the matter. Taking strong note of this matter, the Shillong Press Club has demanded an ''unconditional public apology from Komel Nongbri with immediate effect on publication/broadcast of this statement'' failing which ''the SPC has threatened to proceed with the matter as per the law of the land''.
