SHILLONG: Shillong’s beloved Ward’s Lake is poised for a dramatic transformation as Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh on Thursday announced its official retransfer to the Tourism Department, unlocking a long-awaited redevelopment plan for the iconic destination.

Currently under the Forest and Environment Department, the lake will now be revamped in phases, with Rs 18 crore sanctioned for the first phase. The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma.

“The government intends to introduce several new facilities, including entertainment zones, a leisure area, cafes, and the major highlight — a light show and musical fountain,” Lyngdoh informed.

He added that the lake, one of Shillong’s prime attractions, will also remain open to visitors till 10 PM as part of the upgrade. “The approach road to the lake will be expanded to accommodate the expected increase in tourist footfall, which is projected to double following the redevelopment,” he said.
