SHILLONG: A Sikh organization has taken up the task of distributing food to the needy people of Shillong during the 21-day lockdown.

The United Sikhs are not only providing food twice a day but also dishing out breakfast and tea.

“Due to the lockdown in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, there are many people who are hungry. We wanted to help such needy people so we are distributing food to them,” Surendra Pal Singh Sahota, in-charge north-east of the United Sikh said while speaking to The Sentinel.

Sahota informed that a team of the United Sikhs visits Polo, Pynthotbah, Nongrah, Happy Valley and Nongmensong to feed the hungry.

He however, said that some localities are asking for raw materials but with the lockdown, it would be impossible to provide them.

Sahota said that people are getting their lunch but they are not getting dinner so that’s why on Thursday, the team came out in the evening to serve dinner.

“We therefore came today evening to serve dinner to the people in Jhalupara locality,” the in-charge of United Sikhs in northeast added.
