Slum Children Come To The Fore To Save Mother Earth

SHILLONG: With the world observing Environment Day, the underprivileged and slum children too participated in planting of tress and keeping their environment clean thereby acknowledging their equal responsibility towards protection of the environment.

The SPARK Children and community people across slum and villages of Mawlong, Mawlynrei, Pongkung, Rangmen and Bara Bazaar enthusiastically celebrated the World Environment Day by organizing cleanliness drives and planting trees, amongst many other activities. The celebrations began with an introductory note by Shima Modak, president and founder of SPARK, about the relevance of World Environment Day and the absolute necessities to save mother Earth.

The children under SPARK are observing the day not only just on 5th of June every year but SPARK has made a provision where each child will plant a tree every month as an important part of their curriculum. Started as a pilot work, the initiative has worked very well with 450 children planting a tree each every month in these said areas with an overwhelming response. This has also instilled a sense of responsibility among the children towards the protection of the environment.

This year too, more than 300 saplings were planted by the children.
