Sporadic incidents of violence reported in Meghalaya; 2 people assaulted, 1 man stabbed

MEGHALAYA: Some sporadic incidents of violence were reported from Meghalaya. Two people were assaulted and one man was stabbed by assailants. A truck was also set on fire.

The people assaulted were construction workers who were attacked by some unidentified people in Lawsohtun.

The man who was stabbed worked as a house painter. A CCTV footage shows some people dragging him. The man admitted to Shillong Civil Hospital is recovering.

260 people from Assam who were rescued from the jungles of Meghalaya reached Guwahati on Thursday .

The people had taken refuge in jungles and police station to escape the clashes in Meghalaya that had left three people dead. Most of them were residents of western Assam’s Dhubri, Goalpara and Kokrajhar districts and were working in unorganized sectors in the region.

BJP MLA Ashok Kumar Singhi said that the number of people who need to be rescued from violence hit areas happen to be some 1,500 people.

Assam’s Inspector-General of Police Deepak Kedia said, “We are in constant touch with the Meghalaya police to bring back more stranded people. Some among the rescued said there are many who have taken refuge in police stations and Border Security Force camps in the hill State.”

According to reports, three people had died during the clashes in the region.

Just a few days ago, in a shocking incident, a Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) member, Lurshai Hynniewta was killed following a clash with non-locals at Ichamati, Shella under East Khasi Hills District.

As per info received after the meeting against CAA and demanding ILP, non-tribals cornered the KSU leaders; this led to a clash between the KSU activists and the non-tribals who were well armed with machetes and sticks.

In the melee many KSU activists from Sohra, Shella and adjoining areas were injured.

The president of the KSU was also attacked but was unhurt. The village head of Ichamati village and the police were also assaulted by the non-tribals. Many vehicles including buses were also vandalized in the clash.

Soon after the incident, the East Khasi Hills District the administration had imposed a curfew in the entire district including the capital city Shillong.

The Government of Meghalaya had suspended internet services for the next 48 hours in six districts of Meghalaya including East Jaintia Hills, West Jaintia Hills, East Khasi Hills, Ri-Boi, West Khasi Hills and South West Khasi Hills.
