SHILLONG: The State Cabinet on Tuesday approved the proposal of the Excise, Registration, Taxation and Stamps (ERTS) department to reduce the distance of teer counters from educational institutions and places of worship from the existing 300 meters to 100 meters. According to Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, this was done by amending the Section 1 of Meghalaya Regulation of the Game of Arrow, Shooting and Sale of Teer Ticket Acts, 2018 in the form of ordinance.

Informing reporters after the Cabinet meeting, Tynsong said that according to the original Act, the distance for setting up of teer counters was allowed within a minimum distance of 300 meters from the educational institutional and places of worship.

Tynsong while justifying the Cabinet decision said that 300 meter is quite a huge distance for a small place like Shillong.

The Deputy Chief Minister said, “The proposal made by the ERTS is justified considering the space constraint in Shillong city.”

Meanwhile, the State Cabinet also decided to rename the Agriculture Department to Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare department in line with the decision of the Centre to rename the Ministry of Agriculture as the Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare Ministry from 2015.
